Social justice is the concept that all people should be treated in a fair and impartial manner in their relationships with other people and organizations (e.g. schools and governmental bodies).
For the purposes of the Aronson Award, social justice is tied to the principles of equity and inclusiveness–that all individuals and groups of people are entitled to fair and impartial treatment by other people and organizations. We believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and should have equal access to opportunities and privileges within our community and society.
Social justice issues can occur in relation to practically any aspect of your school, local community or society at large when unfair treatment occurs relating to but not limited to:
- Age
- Education
- Gender
- Mental or Physical Abilities
- Nationality
- Race
- Religion
- Socioeconomic Status
- Sexual Orientation
Each recipient of the Aronson Award is selected because he or she has promoted equality and/or mitigated any inequality that occurs through prejudices or unjust policies.
